Sexual Dysfunction
By Howard Baumgarten, LPC,
with Westside Behavioral Care
Sexual Dysfunction may include problems related to sexual desire, arousal, pain,
premature ejaculation or erectile dysfunction in men, and orgasm-related issues
in women. These problems may be acquired or lifelong. Patients with such
problems may be helped by ongoing talk therapy which is specialized to include
the techniques developed by Masters and Johnson and other pioneers in this
field.
Therapy may include assessment, behavioral modification such as desensitization,
cognitive restructuring, providing education and resource material, medication
evaluation, and/or trauma therapy (for those with sexual trauma in their past).
Some sexual dysfunction may require referral to a medical practitioner; erectile
dysfunction, for example, often has a medical basis. |
