What is Play Therapy?
Play Therapy for Children
By Kim McMillin, LMFT, RN
Play Therapy is an effective way to help children who have emotional challenges
of various sorts. It helps children heal their emotional, behavioral and family
problems.
In Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), the child and the therapist develop a
close and trusting relationship. The therapist enters the child’s world, follows
the child’s lead, and develops a nonjudgmental context for openness and trust.
CCPT sessions occur in a room that has special toys and materials. In the
playroom, the child can express feelings, thoughts, and behaviors through play.
Toys are used like words, symbolically expressing what the child may not be able
to put into words.
CCPT is designed to help children grow up to be as happy and well adjusted as
possible. |
