In Colorado, psychiatric medications may be prescribed by medical doctors, psychiatrists, and advanced practice nurses who have prescriptive authority.

Psychiatric medications can be an effective aid in therapy. Our prescribers can provide medication evaluations/recommendations, ongoing medication management, and medication management with psychotherapy.

If you are already working with one of our therapists, he or she may suggest a medication evaluation with one of our current prescribers. Or, if our prescribers identify issues that may benefit from psychotherapy they cannot provide, they will refer you to one of our many skilled therapists.

Our Clinical Nurse Specialists are licensed to prescribe:

Anti-Anxiety Medications and Antidepressants:

-SSRI’s, such as Zoloft (sertraline), Prozac (fluoxetine), Paxil (paroxetine), Celexa (citalopram) and Lexapro (escitalopram).

-SNRI’s, such as Effexor (venlafaxine) Pristiq and Cymbalta

-Other antidepressants, including TCA’s and MAOI’’s, such as Wellbutrin, Serzone, Remeron, Emsam, Trazodone, Amitriptyline, and Imipramine

-Other anti-anxiety medications, including Neurontin (gabapentin), Lyrica, Buspar (buspirone), Atarax/Vistaril (hydroxyzine) and benzodiazepines.

Bipolar Medications: Lithium, Depakote (valproic acid), Tegretol (carbamazepine), Trileptal, (oxcarbazepine), Klonopin (clonazepam) and New Generation Antipsychotics (see list below under Schizophrenia)

Schizophrenia Medications: (also used for Schizoaffective Disorder and Bipolar Spectrum Disorders): Abilify, Risperdal (risperidone), Zyprexa, Seroquel, Geodon, Saphris, Fanapt, Latuda, Symbyax, Trilafon (perphenazine), Prolixin (fluphenazine), Haldol (haloperidol), Navane (thiothixene) and Loxitane (loxapine)

ADHD medications: Strattera, Focalin, Concerta, Ritalin, Vyvanse, Adderall, Intuniv, Clonidine and Tenex (guanfacine)

Sleep medications: Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta, Sonata (zaleplon), Rozerem, Halcion (triazolam), Restoril (temazepam)

Alcohol dependence: Naltrexone, Vivitrol and Campral

Side effect/other (off label) medications: Levothyroxine, Cytomel, Inderal (propranolol), Metoprolol, Cogentin (benztropine), Artane (trihexyphenidyl), Symmetrel (amantadine), Prazosin, Cyproheptadine and Metformin
